Former Utah Supreme Court Justice & BYU President Dallin H. Oaks (who had BYU security spying on & abusing BYU students suspected of homosexuality (see “the Purge of ‘75) [which led to several students dying by suicide]) had just been appointed as an apostle & he had a plan to fight 🏳️‍🌈 civil rights without tarnishing their reputation as a loving org OR losing in court. so he put it all down in a memo in 1984 to church leaders.

In 1984, Just 4 months after former Utah Supreme Court Justice Dallin H. Oaks was installed in the Quorum of the 12 he wrote a memo to church leaders stating: “In time it may be desirable for the Church to make a public statement on proposed legislation affecting the rights of homosexuals.”

In addition to the Utah Supreme Court, Oaks had also served as President of Brigham Young University (BYU). During his presidency he had BYU security spying on and abusing BYU students suspected of being homosexuals (see "the Purge of '75," Aversion Therapy at BYU, and Surveillance at BYU.)

Oaks wrote that LGBT activists were "skillfully appropriating the rhetoric and tactics of civil rights activists [to] present themselves as an oppressed minority who should be protected by antidiscrimination laws.”
“However, there is little evidence of such intolerance or such broad-based discrimination." he wrote discriminatingly

Oaks warned that if “The public will see the debate as a question of tolerance of persons who are different…and those who oppose may well be seen as unmerciful persecutors."

So he advised that the church shift it’s stance on 🏳️‍🌈 issues. If the church were to rhetorically define homosexuality as something some DOES (same-sex attracted) rather than something someone IS (homosexual), then they could define the anti-queer legal battles as moral issues rather than civil rights issues.
See, 6 yrs earlier in 1978 the church had just lost their rights to discriminate against Black ppl due to the successes of the civil rights organizers over the last 3 decades. And they didn’t want to lose again.

Oaks advised propose "well-reasoned exceptions"-for example, "a youth-protection exception" in teaching and counseling jobs. "Such opposition should be explained, with careful emphasis on the bad effects of homosexual practices (not homosexuals) and the need--for the good of society-to protect youth from homosexual proselyt[iz]ing and role models among their teachers and counselors." (see basically ever anti-LGBTQ2s legislation in the last decade.)

He went on to list some talking points for church leaders, such as: “speak in defense of the family, which is the bulwark of society” as opposed to speaking in opposition to 🏳️‍🌈 rights.
And  "One generation of homosexual 'marriages' would depopulate a nation, and, if sufficiently widespread, would extinguish its people. Our marriage laws should not abet national suicide." (see also T Roosevelt’s “race suicide”)
He wrote that if the church is able to establish & normalize this rhetoric, “the gay rights proposal will lose." And if the Utah Compromise, The Fairness for All Act, & the hundreds of anti-LGBTQI2s bills proposed this year (in 2018 only 41 anti-🏳️‍🌈 bills were proposed. by March 2022, 238 had already been proposed.
This is also the rhetoric used by the World Congress of Families an international anti-🏳️‍🌈 hate group which is supported & funded by this church and has helped to pass anti-🏳️‍🌈 laws in Eastern European (especially Russia) & African countries.

When Putin invaded Ukraine this year he listed the destruction of Russia’s “traditional values” via the creep of Western neoliberalism. The World Congress of Families frames itself as a force resisting colonization in Eastern Europe & Africa by fighting the supposed spread of 🏳️‍🌈-values which they call Western.

In 2018, only 41 anti-🏳️‍🌈 laws were proposed. In 2022, 238 bills (mostly anti-trans) had already been proposed by March.

Time to return to our roots and riot for our rights.
