Utah's current senators, Mike Lee and Mitt Romney, are both descendants of politically powerful Mormon pioneers John Doyle Lee (great-great-grandfather of Mike Lee) was a member of "The Council of Fifty (also known as "the Living Constitution" Or "the Kingdom of God"), a Danite (Mormon secret police), & prominent founder of Mormon colonies through the "Southern Mission" Lee was the only person convicted as a mass murderer for the Mountain Meadows massacre, friend of Joseph Smith, spiritually-adopted son of Brigham Young 1839, Lee served as a missionary with his boyhood friend, Levi Stewart (another prominent ancestor of Mike Lee) 1856, Lee became a United States Indian Agent 1858, Lee served a term as a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature A son of John D. Lee, had two wives. His second wife Inez Hamblin, was a daughter of Jacob Hamblin. Together they have the distinction of having four great grandchildren as U.S. senators from four different U.S. states. Grandchildren: Morris K. Udall, U.S. Representative for Arizona and 1976 U.S. Presidential candidate Stewart Udall, U.S. Representative for Arizona and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Rex E. Lee, U.S. Solicitor General Great-grandchildren: Mike Lee, U.S. Senator for Utah Thomas R. Lee, Associate Chief Justice, Utah Supreme Court Gordon H. Smith, U.S. Senator for Oregon Mark Udall, U.S. Senator for Colorado Tom Udall, U.S. Senator for New Mexico Milan Smith, Jr., Federal Judge, U.S. 9th Circuit Jacob Hamblin, (great-great grandfather of Mike Lee) “A Mormon missionary & a diplomat to various Native American tribes of the Southwest and Great Basin. He aided European-American settlement of large areas of southern Utah and northern Arizona. He is sometimes referred to as the "Apostle to the Lamanites." Edwin Dilworth Woolley, Sr, (great-great-great-uncle of Mike Lee) Member of the Utah Territorial Legislature & a prominent LDS bishop in Salt Lake City for many years. Woolley was the grandfather of J. Reuben Clark (First Presidency & open white-supremacist, major influence on Ezra Taft Benson & Skousen) & Spencer W. Kimball (brains behind the Lamanite Placement Program) Father of John Wickersham Woolley & grandfather of Lorin Calvin Woolley, founding leaders of the Mormon Fundamentalist movement. Member of the Utah Territorial Legislature & a prominent LDS bishop in Salt Lake City for many years. Other descendants Edwin Dilworth Woolley, Jr., Alternate delegate to RNC from UT, 1904 Arthur Snow Woolley, Delegate to RNC from UT, 1924, 1952 Heber Chase Kimball (great-great-great uncle of Mike Lee) One of the original twelve apostles in the early Church of the Latter Day Saints, first counselor to Brigham Young in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church for more than two decades, & served in the Utah Territorial Legislature in the upper house from 1851 until 1858. Nick Udall, Great grandson (mayor of Phoenix, Arizona from 1948-52) Spencer W. Kimball, Grandson (12th Pres of this church, creator of the Lamanite Placement Program) Jefferson Hunt, (great-great great-great-uncle of Mike Lee) The "Father of San Bernardino County," was a major in the Nauvoo Legion, a captain in the Mormon Battalion, brigadier general in the California State Militia, a California State Assemblyman, and a representative to the Utah Territorial Legislature. In 1851 he was called to help create a Mormon colony in San Bernardino, California. This colony was the first American settlement in California after Statehood & founded the town of Huntsville, Utah. He served as a representative to the Utah Territorial Legislature in 1863, Hunt has a number of noteworthy descendants: John Hunt Udall, great-grandson, Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona Jesse Addison Udall, great-grandson, Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court Don Taylor Udall, great grandson, Arizona State Legislator Nick Udall, and great grandson, Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona Gordon Harold Smith, 3rd great-grandson, U.S. Senator from Oregon Milan Dale Smith, Jr., 3rd great grandson, Federal Judge, U.S. 9th Circuit Levi Stewart, (great-great-great uncle of Mike Lee) baptized by Jefferson Hunt, was a founder of Kanab, Utah, & traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah as members of the Brigham Young Company, arriving in September 1848. He served a mission with John D. Lee as his companion. His daughter, Eliza, the first telegraph operator in the Arizona Territory, worked out of Pipe Springs, a Church-owned cattle ranch meant to supply food to the St. George, UT temple workers. Here my people committed genocide against the Kaibab Paiute, through overgrazing & water theft. David King Udall, Sr. (great-great-uncle of Mike Lee) was a representative to the Arizona Territorial Legislature and the founder of the Udall political family. He married a daughter of Jefferson Hunt, the "Father of San Bernardino County, " & a daughter of Levi Stewart, founder of Kanab, Utah. Udall was called to be the Mormon bishop in St. Johns, Arizona. Immediately after moving his family there, Udall purchased lands and directed improvements geared toward creating a larger Mormon settlement of the area. His list of noteworthy descendants is too numerous to mention here. I ran out of time to build an equally exhaustive list of he Romney political pioneer family, but above are two family trees for the Romneys tying them to powerful Mormon Pioneer families. Notable Romney family members include: Gaskell Romney & Anna Amelia Pratt, grand daughter of renowned early Latter-day Saint apostle Parley P. Pratt. They are parents of George W. Romney the 43rd Governor of Michigan. His son, Mitt Romney is 7oth Governor of Massachusetts, Republican nominee for Pres of the US in 2012, & current U.S. Senator for Utah. The family is linked by marriage to the Joseph Smith family, and has a lateral relationship with the Matheson family (UT Political family), the Huntsman family (UT Political family), and the Eyring family (Henry B. Eyring, current First Presidency) This is Miles Park Romney, Mitt's great-grandpa.
He was the president of the St. George Social Hall Company and the St. George Dramatic Association, and also served as a chief of police, attorney-at-law, newspaper editor, and architect Miles Park Romney was called to St. Johns, Arizona, as part of the Church leadership's plan to settle a larger area. (See also: David King Udall) He & family emigrated to Mexico to avoid prosecution for their illegal practice of polygamy. Miles is also the grandpa of Spencer W. Kimball & great grandpa of Henry B. Eyring. Did our people really flee the "divine right of kings" or did we just start over with different bloodlines? How much is the power & wealth of today seeded in stolen land & the genocide/assimilation violence necessary to steal someone else's homeland? How much is your life shaped by the 19th c.? Are you aware this nation became a "superpower" through chattel enslavement & genocidal land theft? Are you aware how deeply flawed (& white supremacist) our myths of meritocracy are? ----------------------------------- For reference: I am also a descendant of Mormon pioneers. My entire family line was in UT in 1884 & they never left. So even tho many of these ppl, bc of their polygamous marriages, now have 10's of thousands of descendants, the nearest relation i have to any of these ppl goes back to the 1600's in Europe & in Puritan colonies I guess to say that this isn't *just* the result of my People intentionally isolating themselves & narrowing their gene pool & 150 yrs later everyone is related.

AuthorI am nicholas b jacobsen, an artist, researcher, historian, educator, and organizer. I am a trans-non binary Euro-settler raised in the Nuwu lands of so-called Utah. My family has been Mormon and Utahn for as long as either of those concepts have existed. My ancestors sacrificed everything--their identities, homelands, jobs, health, & safety to become Mormon, Utahn, U.S. American, & white--to settler their Zion. They also sacrificed their humanities as they committed genocide against Kuttuhsippeh (Goshute), Timpanogos Shoshone, Shoshone-Bannock, Eastern Shoshone, Ute, Nuwu (Southern Paiute), and Diné (Navajo). Because my ancestors made my home through Indigenous genocide in their home/lands––I take it as my personal responsibility to unsettle what my ancestors settled, while helping my fellow settlers do the same through reading, writing, art, and community building.
